Politics have always influenced fashion. Designers and celebrities—are they at a turning point?
Resistance and fashion used to go hand in hand, like Cinderella and her glass slipper, but recently it seems like they have drifted apart. At the 2024 Met Gala, which honoured the dress code of “The Garden of Time” by honouring delicate antique garments in its “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion” theme, stars played it straight with florals and darkness. Concurrently, students from Hunter College in New York voiced their opposition to the Gaza war by chanting “We will not stop, we will not rest” outside the yearly event. During an occasion that is typically not shy about welcoming sociopolitical disruption, celebrities and designers essentially ignored humanitarian crises of the world, from Israel’s war with Palestinians in the Gaza strip to growing instability in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Three miles away from the Metropolitan Museum of Art gala, and days later, students organising the future of fashion took place backstage and on the streets.
Students from Students For Justice in Palestine, an unofficial club at the Fashion Institute of Technology, demanded transparency regarding their school’s financial involvement in war at the annual Future of Fashion runway show.
